Part 1 of 2. Watch in high definition! Classic Game Room HD reviews the infamous ATARI 5200 controller for the Atari 5200 video game system from 1982. This analog controller with keypad is notorious for having problems nearly 30 years after its release. The innards fall to pieces, buttons stop working and the joystick is like mush. However if you want to play some awesome Atari 5200 games, and there is a huge complete list of amazing Atari 5200 games, then you’re pretty much stuck with the OEM stock Atari 5200 controller. You can buy parts to repair it yourself or purchase refurbished Atari 5200 controllers, and Wico made some aftermarket controllers, but those options are costly. Ignoring those major problems, how does the Atari 5200 controller stack up against other joysticks and controllers from video game consoles past and present? Watch the review for a complete technical presentation reviewing this piece of Atari history. Classic Game Room HD reviews joysticks and video game accessories for retro old school game systems and the new consoles like Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360.

@Bulrog10 The Powerglovew atleast funtioned and was for the time inovative. I think the Nerds was either broken or he was too close to the T.V. but I don’t know. Anyway there has to be someone out there that took this piece of sghit controler anmd redid it so the joystick recenters automatically and so it won’t break after a few hours.

@shadowtsunami 5200 controller, because the 7200 controller will actually work longer than the atari 5200 controller. the 5200 controller will die in hours.
July 29, 2010
does anyone know where there are after market controllers for the 5200? I don’t feel right buying a rebuilt controller that uses the same parts… seems pointless
July 29, 2010
whats worse 5200 controller or 7800 controller

“It feels like a broken Atari 2600 controller atached to a telephone.”
Now that sounds awesome.

Very good review. And I liked the music used at the end.
I’ve never used classic systems, but you explained the pain of that controller well enough for me to understand.
On the plus side, I guess it did pave the way for the analog sticks on our PS and Xbox controllers. With 3D games out today, they are definitely much better to use than a D-pad or a non-analog joystick.
July 29, 2010
didnt they make a type 2 self centering controller that still sucked
July 29, 2010
Granted we were probably tough on them, but those damn controllers had a shelf life of about 6 months each! Who knows how many we were through. Poor mom.
July 29, 2010
I wanna buy one just to experience the pain and disappointment kids got when they first tried it out on there 5200 LOL

Part 3:
Anyway, my original system was disposed of a couple years ago but I started feeling masochistic, er, um, I mean nostalgic again so I just bought a used system…what an a**hole I am! It is said that the real definition of insanity is when you do the same thing over and over and expect different results every time…well, see you in the nut house!
